140322C"...a decided advance in our understanding of Philo's cross-cultural program....adds considerable weight to the seriousness with which Philo's allegorical program must have been pursued."&#8212 Burton L. Mack, Claremont School of Theology

This study, translated from the Portuguese original, is the most complete ever published of Philo of Alexandria's extensive knowledge and application of the theories and methods of ancient Greco-Roman rhetoric. After reviewing the rhetorical traditions that influenced Philo, Alexandre analyzes the use of rhetorical proofs and structures in passages drawn from eighteen of Philo's biblical commentaries and non-exegetical treatises. This study demonstrates convincingly that rhetorical criticism can illuminate the meaning and purposes of Philo's numerous writings. The issues and conclusions presented here will interest scholars in the fields of ancient Judaism and Christianity, hermeneutics, and Greco-Roman rhetoric.
