A biography and intellectual history of the Jewish biblical scholar, Max Leopold Margolis (1866–1932). Born in Lithuania, Margolis immigrated to the United States where, in 1891, he earned his Ph.D. from Columbia. Three aspects of Margolis’ subsequent career are highlighted: his work as editor-in-chief of the Jewish Publication Society’s Bible translation of 1917; his research in to the Septuagint and other areas of biblical textual criticism; and his thoughts on the relationship between biblical and Jewish studies.

Personal glimpses of Margolis as recounted in interviews with his former students and colleagues supplement extensive archival materials on which the biography is based.

Leonard Greenspoon is Associate Professor of History/Religion at Clemson University in Clemson, South Carolina.
