“In his ‘slightly revised version’ (p. ix) of a doctoral dissertation written under Prof. Thomas O. Lambdin and accepted at Harvard in 1971, Fr. Miles sets about creating a Greek-Ethiopic ‘syntacticon,’ i.e., a ‘book’ which functions like a lexicon whose entries are grammatical constructions instead of letters or words. Although Miles’s study is based upon the Book of Esther, he does not mention the book in his title because he is primarily interested in establishing a textual witness to the LXX of Esther by a retroversion from the Ethiopic. … Miles is fully justified in concluding that ‘the mechanical prediction of translation syntax and the recovering from the translation of original syntax would seem on the basis of our study to be possible’ (p. 200).”
