The Problem of Curse in the Hebrew Bible
Herbert Chanan Brichto
“The subject of this investigation is a complex of biblical terms which are variously, and often indiscriminately, rendered in English (and in other Western languages) by the word ‘curse’ or by its near equivalents.… The present study purposes to investigate all the pertinent occurrences of the terms for ‘curses’ in the Bible in greater detail than has yet been attempted, with the specific objective of determining how they compare and differ in each case; to attempt to arrive at a more precise determination of the original denotation of each term, that is, of its narrowest meaning before its connotative value broadens its usage into synonymous ambiguity with other terms conceptually related but etymologically and semantically distinct.”
