A Study of the Language of the Biblical Psalms
“Biblical scholars first became interested in the investigation of the language of particular parts of biblical literature through higher criticism. Differences in vocabulary, grammar, and style have been one of the foundations for the theory of the separation of the Pentateuch into four documents. These studies were conducted chiefly at the end of the past and the beginning of the present century.… The present study, an investigation of the language of the biblical psalms, has no primary aim beyond itself. Its object is a description of the idiom of the psalms as against the whole of classical Hebrew. After this objective has been reached, some of its aspects will be related to the history of psalm composition in Israel.”
